TAORMINA |
MT. ETNA: The largest and
most active volcano in Europe. The climb to the crater
takes us through picturesque villages and an ever
changing landscape. The lower slopes of the volcano are
extremely fertile with groves of oranges, lemons and
other Mediterranean flora and of course vines, which
produce Sicily's best wines. We go through forests of
chestnut trees, which gradually give way to oak, beech,
birch and pine.
 TAORMINA:
Sicily's prime tourist resort was discovered by the
British aristocracy in the mid 1800's. Facing Etna and
the blue Mediterranean, this peaceful panoramic resort,
206m above sea level was colonised by the Greeks who
built a theatre in the Hellenic period - 3 B.C. The
present Teatro Greco, altered by the Romans, is the venue
for classical plays every summer. The main street, the
elegant Corso Umberto, with its cafes, restaurants and
boutiques is a bustle of nationalities.

| POZZALLO, NOTO, MODICA &
RAGUSA |
Noto and the main towns of the
Province of Ragusa, once dominated by medieval castles,
are today the "Baroque Acropolis" of Sicily.
This followed years of construction after the devastating
earthquake of 1693.
Ragusa; the
provincial capital, was re-built as two separate
districts, the original lbla, at 500 metres and the
Baroque centre, and Ragusa at 600 metres the commercial
centre. San Giorgio, in Ibla, is one of the most splendid
eighteenth century Sicilian baroque Churches. The very
beautifully decorated Palazzi in this quiet part of town
are a tribute to Sicilian art and culture.
Modica; once so
important as to constitute a kingdom within the kingdom,
is today a prosperous town still dependent on its
traditional agricultural economy. The beautiful flight of
steps leading to the main entrance and the statues
representing the twelve apostles are the main features of
S.Pietro's church. The main street or "Corso",
with it's mixture of magnificent buildings, mostly
convents and monasteries and modern shops and at fresco
cafes, is a thriving town centre.
Noto; the "Capitale
del Barocco", was the seat of the Sicilian
aristocracy, the many baroque palaces with their
elaborate facades and balconies are testimony to those
days.
The
main street, Corso Vittorio Emanuele, opens onto three
piazzas, the first Piazza lmmacolata. The Cathedral
dedicated to S. Nicolo, the architectural masterpiece of
the town, is in Piazza Municipale where Palazzo Landolina
is also to be found. The Palazzo belongs to the St.
Alfano family, the oldest noble family of Norman origin
in Noto. On the way to Piazza XVI Maggio, in Via
Nicolaci, is the ornate Palazzo Nicolaci, or Villadorata
after the family name. The palace is well known for the
varied and artistic corbels supporting the balcony. The
Church of S. Domenico, in the piazza, is Gagliardi's
masterpiece.
