Other interesting Villages in Malta

Zurrieq, Mqabba, Qrendi and Siggiewi

These lovely old villages are known for their stone quarries of good quality soft globigerina limestone which we use for building purposes. In Zurrieq lies the Blue Grotto and on a day when the sea is calm a trip to the caves in a fishing boat is highly recommended. In Zurrieq one can see one of these stone quarries. All the quarries are privately owned and the life of a quarry is approximately five years, because then it is too deep and dangerous to cut more stone. It is also said that the best stone masons are to be found in this part of Malta. The Zurrieq Parish Church dedicated to St Philip is a beautiful Baroque Church. Siggiewi is our oldest village. The Parish Church is dedicated to St Nicholas.

Going to Ghar Lapsi through Siggiewi one can see some very lovely country-side. One can also enjoy a breath-taking view of the sea and also have a glimpse of one of the reverse osmosis plants i.e. desalination plants. Water is taken from the sea, the salt is then removed, the water is purified and it comes nice and fresh in our taps. These desalination plants are American "Polymetrics" and work with oil. We have four of them on the island and they account for 60% of our water production. The other 40% is collected in huge reservoirs during the winter months and is heavily chlorinated.
