THE THREE VILLAGES

BALZAN, ATTARD AND LIJA

Interesting to note is that in Malta we do not only have the Three Cities but also the Three Villages. These are Balzan, Attard and Lija. All these three villages have beautiful baroque churches and have kept all their character. Here one can see many beautiful town houses. During Phoenician times a town was only called a town if it was fortified. This system was also adopted by the Knights of the Order of St John, to classify towns or villages. But in reality the word village in the case of Balzan, Attard and Lija is really a misnomer. Here in this area are to be found the most beautiful orange groves and some very lovely, elegant villas. They are peaceful, residential areas. In Attard is also San Anton Gardens, where we also have the private residence of our President. These gardens were the private gardens and palace of Grand Master Antoine de Paule. In Attard is also one deluxe hotel - the Corinthia Palace Hotel. A walk around the three villages and San Anton Gardens is most enjoyable.
